hi, i was passed your link by a friend who is part of a different drumming group to me,
The group i am part of was predominantly male for a very long time and the few female drummers they had at the begining did feel marginalised, however we women seem to have evolved the group into more of a family and the group is at its best now with people commenting on how happy we all seem....largly down to the fact that 'the pentacle ladies' are now out numbering the men but the balance in drumming energy is more balanced.
sadly my rythem is non exhistent so i just smile a lot lol

keep up the good work x

Hi Kalani,

Thanks for your feedback. I thought of you while I was reading, "The Power of Music: Pioneering Discoveries in the New Science of Song".
If you haven't already read it, you must get it!

It offers some brillant findings regarding neurologic music therapy, neuroscience, and music.
Food for your intellectual soul.

Thank you for listing all these resources Pamela!

There are so many aspects of music making and how it could affect the brain on many levels and via many different types of experiences - listening, playing, creating, composing, improvising, re-creating, learning, performing, etc. I think your Dopamine study might show some benefits from learning and mastering a skill, something that could relate to FLOW and a state of unconscious competence (Maslow). Keep up the great work my friend!

I would like to quote Alondra de la Parra who is a young female conductor and has experienced first hand the hardships of getting recognition in the music world dominated by men. In an interview for a coming issue of Gramophone I think she has some words that can bring some light to the debate. She says: "the career that I have chosen is not for the weak of heart, regardless of their condition, gender or nationality. Musicianship is the ultimate levelling field".
The rest of the article with the interview is here: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/blog/gramophone-guest-blog/the-challenges-of-being-a-female-conductor.
Ms Pamela, you're good and that's what matters independently of your gender. Please be brave, don't get distracted by non essential things and continue doing what you do best: Drumming!

Hi Jon,

Wow, your response is incredibly perceptive.
Thank you for joining in on the dialogue.

It’s an important conversation to have, and yet it can sometimes lead down the wrong path due to semantics.
You managed to cut through the clutter, and reveal the heart of the conversation.

Thank you for your insight, and support.
Much appreciated.

Btw: Your youtube video on called: "Peak Rhythms- Drum Team Building for Sports Teams"

is outstanding!

Hi Pamela
Thanks for the clarification.
I hear you on the 'women come from a different perspective' and I have my wife of 25 years to thank for keeping me on track with all things feminine ;)
I think 2000 was my first playshop so there is a very good chance we may have met. I was mentored by Sha that year and had a very deep learning experience but find it hard to pull specific memories of meetings to mind..Forgive me.
Keep on with the rhythm.

Pamela,

Kudos to you for initiating this dialogue. I support you 100%.

I love the bigger issue of reconciling the feminine and masculine within ourselves, amongst each other, and how we dance together. Here's my question. How do you drum and stand in your power as a woman without compromising your femininity and feeling too much like you're having to man up? Men need women to be in their power and vice versa.

The overall tone feels to me that you've sometimes given up your feminine power to certain male teachers. I think that you and other female drummers have something to teach men by embracing your femininity, embodying your power, and offering those qualities and energy in your technique and music. And, of course you know this, but there's a balance of learning technique, but also transcending it and making it your own. I think a woman's technique and music should probably differ energetically from a man's, as well as offer some overlap of an understanding and essence of the music. Here's what I ask, keep growing and discovering what it is to be a powerful woman drummer/musician and trust that, particularly when it differs from male energy. Men can't teach you that. We need powerful women like you to discover, trust, and be yourself.

Blessings,

Jon
